If you get a friend request on Facebook or MySpace from someone calling himself Uncle Sam in the next few weeks, don’t be alarmed. The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has just signed a terms of service contract with Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube and AddThis, among other so-called social-networks. It seems Uncle Sam was feeling isolated and lonely without the ability to connect, to reach out and touch, via the current social wormhole for connecting people, content and culture.
The GSA, which started in the 1940s under the Hoover administration, has evolved over the last 60 years into an agency which manages information and technology portals and services for the government. Its stated mission is to “help federal agencies better serve the public by offering, at best value, superior workplaces, expert solutions, acquisition services and management policies.”
Great, just what we need. The agency charged with disseminating government data making friends with all of the global lunatics on Facebook and MySpace. That gives me a warm and fuzzy…….and secure feeling……..just knowing that more of my personal data may make its way into the hands of cyber lunatics and increase the risk of identity theft.
Go do a GSA search on yourself at USASearch.gov. I did and all I came up with was the listing of the 2nd Circuit Case which I lost in 2007 and my 2nd Circuit bar admission. Uncle Sam’s no friend of mine – why can’ t he list the cases I’ve won?
